Phaphama Book Festival 2024

// Celebrating Literature, Culture, and Democracy //

This August, the Phaphama Book Festival returns for its 2024 edition, running from the 21st to the 24th, in the vibrant city of Bloemfontein. Hosted by St Francis Productions, this festival offers a dynamic platform for celebrating the achievements of both established and emerging authors while fostering meaningful discussions centered around literature and culture.

This year’s festival holds special significance as South Africa commemorates 30 years of democracy, while also celebrating the 200-year anniversary of the Basotho nation. These pivotal milestones will form the backdrop for various debates, discussions, and performances throughout the festival, exploring the legacy and future of African culture, literature, and history.

A Journey of Storytelling: Bringing Arola to Life

One of the highlights of the Phaphama Book Festival 2024 is the theatre adaptation of Professor Zakes Mda's beloved book, Arola. The story follows the remarkable journey of a 10-year-old girl who travels across ten African countries, exploring the diverse cultures and traditions of the continent. The drama production promises to captivate audiences with its vibrant fusion of music, dance, and theatre, bringing Arola’s adventure to life on stage in an unforgettable way. Charmza Literary Club will be presenting their theatre adaption of author and playwright, Prof Zakes Mda's, book "Arola" for the festival, so you definitely do not want to miss out on this production.
