The Africa XR Report has arrived

// "A community initiative to map our XR - Extended Reality ecosystem" //

Greetings fam. I hope you are well. The Africa XR Report is a community initiative to map our extended reality ecosystem for the first time, and is the result of a 15 month long survey. Led by the editorial team of Judith Okonkwo, Dale Deacon, and Gareth Steele, it began as a zoom call between Dale, Arome and Judith in 2021. The report contains some of the stories of African developers, artists, businesses, makers and teachers who spend their days exploring these technologies.

It has been divided into two parts; Part One reports on the survey conducted between February 2021 and January 2022, and Part Two, which celebrates the achievements and stories of the current state of XR on the continent, was carried out with support from Meta in partnership with AfricaNoFilter, Imisi 3D, and Electric South. It's great to see such amazing support for this ecosystem initiative and it's always great to see such initiatives where Africans tell their own (XR) story. They have also begun a directory for XR on the continent, so if you are providing XR products or services in Africa and you're not listed, then make sure you submit your details on the website for inclusion.

If you've ever wondered what's happening within the Immersive media sector on the continent, then this is definitely one of the best places to start. There's a quite a number of community organizers with first-hand experience of how the XR industry continues to create jobs, empower artists, educate youth, solve business problems, and inspire experimentation.
