Wassup wassup fam. I hope you all good and taking it easy with this whole lock-down and social distancing. Today I'm giving you an update on ASAPH, a talented Zimbabwean Hip Hop artist who we've been trying to keep up with for a minute. The brother has been releasing music quite frequently ever since we had the first draft of this article, so we figured that we might as well keep you in the loop on the amazing music that he has released or featured on so far. It's gonna be a bit of deep dive, so make sure you are comfortable, connect your speakers or headphones, and get ready to immerse yourself in some dope music. We are going to start from his latest feature on the track Ginde, then we'll travel back and forth a bit.
ALRIGHT. Let's get started. 2 days ago, the official music video to the smash-hit "Ginde by Crooger featuring Asaph and Ti Gonzi" dropped and I must say that the visuals are fire. I love the synergy between the beat by JohnTheProducer, the video directed by Simdoc, and the verses by some of Zimbabwe's heavyweight artists. They had dropped the lyric video to the song on the 10th of April, so peeps been listening to this jam for a while now , and it's no surprise that it was eventually complimented with a dope video. Shout out to Rayobeats and Tashamiswa as well because they also played a part in this production. The hook will definitely leave you hooked, and that's what I believe hooks are meant to do fam. This is definitely a Monday morning type of jam that you listen to get your energy levels up, or when you need that extra motivation for the grind.
"When they tell me no, ndoita zveginde, ndoita zveginde, ndoita zveginde, take the no, turn it to a yes!!!". This joint is such a vibe. Anyway, let's continue and rewind to the Pungwe sessions. ASAPH was one of the artists who were selected to be part of the Pungwe sessions volume 2. Point Black Africa – a digital content and marketing company had partnered with Goethe-Zentrum Harare/ Zimbabwe German Society on this collaborative project, with the goal of promoting Zimbabwean artists and changing the landscape of Zimbabwean popular music. It features 13 songs from over a dozen Zimbabwean artists such as Simba Tagz, Nutty O, Garry Mapanzure GZE, Boss Pumacol, Chengeto, Garry Mapanzure, Soko Matemai, Ammara Brown, King Kandoro, Michael Chiunda Sylent Nqo, Thaiwanda and Shashl.
This project was produced in full by platinum-selling producer Rymez (Hurtin, Me, Heatwave, Senseless) who worked with every artist in the studio providing the same invaluable guidance that he has offered to the numerous chart-topping superstars he has worked with. Pungwe Sessions Vol. 2 is a follow up the 2014 offering that Rymez produced in partnership with Point Black’s Managing Director, Phil Chard. You can find more information about the project here. ASAPH featured on 2 tracks: "Prayer featuring Rymez, GZE & Sylent Nqo " (Watch Lyric video here) and "Calling featuring Rymez, Ammara Brown & Sylent Nqo"(Listen here or click on track artwork below). If I had to choose my favorite between "Prayer" and "Calling", I would choose "Calling". It's another jam that has a chorus that will definitely stick in your head for a while, and Sylent Nqo came through once again to show us why he is the guitar sangoma. The ASAPH and Amamara Brown combo is a correct vibe that we should see and hear more often, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who believes this. Moving on, we're now gonna talk about the second single "Like so/ Mhoroi" from ASAPH for 2020. He released the video in March, which was shot at the Bulawayo Large City Hall by Marcus Khumalo of BlackInk Creates, and has to date not only featured on national TV but also on Channel O. It's always great to see artists having their work featured on mainstream platforms that attract a significant number of audiences (both national and international). Shout out to AyKayKing who produced the beat. The song is basically a "dedication to everyone surviving the times; an anthem to lift our spirit as a nation and bring positivity to everyone that can relate!"
Last but not least, we'll now talk about the song by Tasha called "Bho Zvekuti" which he featured on and was released just over a month ago. Rayobeats was on song production, Magna Shoka was the director and editor of the video, and Tasha and ASAPH came through with the dope verses. It's another jam that show's ASAPH's consistency when it comes to delivering great music and working with great artists. This song is the first time I listened to Tasha, and she's really dope (I dig the flow and the bars). I like the simplicity of this video, and look forward to hearing more music from Tasha as well.
